I grew up in the Amish community and all of my friends and family worked in Construction so i just followed the same path. I didn’t have much of a desire to do framing but most of my friends did it so I started out of peer pressure. I soon learned that I loved working with my hands and seeing houses be built. When I first started framing, I felt very intimidated on the job site. I also felt pressure to work faster and harder that I knew how. The first company I worked for was a large company with multiple crews working on different projects. I joined a crew as a laborer and just assisted with whatever needed done.
I also worked in the shop where they would pre-build some of their framing items. That’s where I learned how to use a saw and nail gun. When I would go with some of the crews on site, I would help with small project tasks. My first memory was putting subfloor glue on floor joists. It felt very intimidating being on site with a crew of experience guys. I didn’t enjoy working for that company because there was a lot of arrogance and unhealthy competition.
I joined a second company that was a smaller business with only 4 to 6 guys. That was more enjoyable because they valued teamwork and camaraderie. My employer was great to work with and taught me a lot of what I know. Even though he was better to work for I still had to overcome a lot of fears and insecurities. Fear of heights, running heavy machinery and tools, and insecurity from lack of experience.I worked for that employer for 7 years then became self employed and have owned my business since.
During my career as a framing contractor I’ve employed multiple men that were new to construction and taught them how to frame. I enjoy the teaching aspect and always love helping anyone learn and grow.
